I was thinking of the Mario series lately and after going down the list of characters, I stopped at Waluigi. The more I thought about this mischievous and lanky character, the more I became intrigued by him. Immediately, I scoured Google in an attempt to surface more info on him. I had to find out more of his back-story, and, if I happened to miss a game when this was revealed. What I found out was that this character has only been present in Mario spin-off titles since the 2000 release of Mario Tennis, for the Nintendo 64.

It seems funny to me that a character was introduced into the series, but has yet to reveal his significance in the Mario universe. Sure, we can all agree that Nintendo wanted to maintain a balance with Luigi, just as they did with Mario, by having a villainous counterpart. But, was this a fair comparison? I want you to think hard about the question I am about to ask you. "Who do you like more, Mario or Luigi?" Aha! There is the million-dollar question, isn't it? Who is the superior brother? Well, in my opinion, both are great but I lean slightly in favor of Luigi. I can guarantee that I am not alone in this opinion, either. My point is, if so many people love Luigi, and Waluigi is his rival, then why hasn't Waluigi been present in a main game to explain this unrevealed rivalry?

I do not think that Nintendo should release a game solely based on Waluigi. His popularity amongst the public seems to be shaky, at best. He wasn’t even included in Mario Kart 7. For some unknown reason though, Wario and Daisy (both rivals) were. Wario however, seems to be a much more likable character and even sports has his own series to prove it. I think a game similar to the style of Super Mario 64 (3D environment), but starring Luigi and his rival Waluigi, could work quite well. At the end of the day, all I hope is that Nintendo will finally shed some light on this mystery man.

What are your thoughts? Does Waluigi deserve a true back-story?

I truly believe they need to give him his own back story. I was really disappointed when Wiggler made it to Mario Kart 7 and Waluigi just gets a stage. After racing with him in Mario Kart DS he quickly became one of my favorites.

Thank you! I knew I couldn't be the only one that was upset that he wasn't featured in MK7.  What they should have allowed was for 4 more characters for the game that were released in the way of QR Codes like they did for Mario Tennis Open. I loved Waluigi in Mario Kart Wii.

I'm not sure how much demand there would be for a Waluigi series but I would love to see a back-story for him. I will also say, though, that I like the mystery behind the character. Maybe, maybe Nintendo is keeping his secrets for something new and exciting in the future.

I don't even remember the first game I played that contained Waluigi.  He (in my opinion) is so "blah" as a character.  In the games I have played containing him, he adds nothing, he is one of the least memorable, as I said before, blah.  I'm with Kevin in saying that he could not carry a series on his own.

You can kind of sum Waluigi up like the "tree in the forest" question.

If Waluigi never made another appearance in a game, would anyone notice?  Better yet, would anyone care?

Well, he didn't make an appearance in Mario Kart 7, which was actually a bit surprising to the general fan base. Here are just a few sources to prove that it was shocking information.

GameFAQ's - WHAT!? No waluigi????

The Something Awful Forums - Whyyyyy did they take out Waluigi?!

Nintendo NSider2 Forums - Waluigi in Mario Kart 7?

Nintendo World Report - Waluigi, We Hardly Knew Ye

Nintendo Fan Forum - No Waluigi in Mario Kart 7?!

So, yeah...we was actually missed more than we all think.

Yes I do think he would be missed. As I mentioned in the post, I also don't think he deserves his own series such as Wario but he at least deserves more insight into his background. How can you really like/dislike someone you know so little about? Mario Luigi Peach Toad Koopa Wario Boo and Yoshi all have history (in some form or another) and we form our decisions on who we like and don't like based on that. Waluigi deserves a chance.

So, you can formulate an opinion about someone  based on their name alone?

In the beginning I can agree I wasn't convinced about the name but it grew on me and now I have no issues.

Nah, I'm just being a jerk. I do think he's pointless filler, though.

There's plenty of pointless filler floating around the Mushroom Kingdom though!

Specifically in Mario Kart 7, Honey Queen and Wiggler. Now, tell me how the heck those characters beat out Waluigi. Seriously, they could have ditched one of those. Ultimately, they're both pointless filler.

Oh ok, I see your point. Honestly I would have only ditched Wiggler. I think that Honey Bee was a "different" addition to the cast. I mean the only one we normally get from the Mario Galaxy series is Rosalina.
