Predict My Step Count
Yesterday, I thought of a pretty cool idea. I haven't seen anyone, anywhere else do something like this so it should be really interesting and fun.
Here's your chance to make a prediction and win a prize at the conclusion of the event. Here are the details. I might add more along the way, based on feedback.
- Predict the total number of steps that are recorded on my Nintendo 3DS, without exceeding the amount. Whoever is closest without going over...wins!
- Event starts immediately and ends December 31st, 2012 at 11:59 Eastern Standard Time (EST).
- Post your prediction in this article (or on the Google+ post) to enter the contest.
- Prize valuation is determined by how many people provide a prediction.
- Share this article with your friends; the more predictions, the better.
- Predictions will no longer be accepted after February 12, 2012 at 11:59PM. That's not a random, arbitrary date...it actually means something. "This means you have about two full weeks to get the word out!
- Predictions can be changed unlimited times until they are no longer accepted. If someone wishes to change their prediction, they simply update their number here, or on the Google+ page.
- I plan on providing updates every 1st of the month so you can track the accuracy of your prediction.
- strapping my 3DS onto some type of animal and using food as a fetch method
- duct-taping my 3DS onto a rotating device, such as a ceiling fan or vehicle wheel
- keeping my 3DS warm by leaving it on top of the dryer, while clothes are drying
For proof, here is a picture I took just moments before creating this article:

Currently, I have 8,358 steps recorded for this year. Will you be able to predict how many steps I will take for the remainder of the year? We'll see about that.
Make your prediction today!
With that, I'm going for a brisk walk.
Current predictions:

OK, added to the Original Post (OP)
I also added a detail...
"Predictions can be changed unlimited times until they are no longer accepted. If someone wishes to change their prediction, they simply update their number here, or on the Google+ page."
The Price Is Right strategy doesn't work too well when you can change your prediction.

First off, that would be really chaotic to maintain. While, I totally understand you're reasoning behind this, it would simply be too time-consuming and incredibly hard to track. Remember, the contest is not only for members here. Everyone in the Nintendo Nerds Google+ circle can participate as well. Making Google+ predictions public, while having private predictions here just wouldn't be fair. In essence, having this contest/ event globally public makes it fair so everyone can see what's going on. If private, there would also be speculation on the validity and legitimacy of the event.
Besides, predictions are just that...predictions. Once the final prediction submission date comes (Feb 12th), there's no telling what I'll do. I could walk 10 miles in a day, or simply not carry my 3DS with me for a solid month. I want this to feel as natural as possible for me. Basically, these predictions are, quite simply, relative. There's just no telling what I'll do. I myself, don't even have any unearthly idea how the final result will end up.

Jeez. You should take your 3DS with you more often! So far, I walked 39,413 steps with my 3DS this month. I also walked 180,453 steps from August 11, 2011- December 31, 2011!

I've only recently become more interested in reaping the benefits of collecting play coins. I do plan on taking it along with me quite often though.
Do you care to wager a prediction, statistics boy?

What's the best way to water-proof your 3DS?
From sweat? I've never had a problem with sweat on my 3DS in my pocket. If you're going to place your 3DS next to a cold drink in your backpack, the best case that I've seen is the Nintendo 3DS Hard Pouch.

You guys will be forced to eventually get my stale sense of humor sooner or later. I figured, with all those steps, that you and your 3DS were at least scrubbing each other's backs.

I tend to perspire much less than your average person. Normally that would be a cause of concern, but I also drink more liquids than your average person, so I guess I'm just lucky.

You're still not getting me, man.
Unfortunately, the humor (or lack thereof) I was trying to incorporate has failed...miserably. I'll leave you with a video I found of you and your 3DS since you two spend so much time together. Note: A 3DS was not available at the time of this recording, therefore, a rubber duckie was used.

Yeah, I totally failed on that. I can tell you, though, that sabby would have at least caught that.

He got jealous and left.
I've added a new rule. Maybe this will help spur the participation level. No prizes will be awarded until at least 5 people have made a prediction. The good news is, the starting value of the prize will be $20.00. So, once we get at least 5 participants, we can get this going. If not, I don't feel it's necessary to award a prize when there's no ample amount of participation.
Here's another incentive.
For every 5 participants AFTER the first five have made their predictions, the value of the prize will increase by $10.00. Please note that I've capped the maximum value off at $75.00. That's a pretty rewarding incentive, wouldn't you say?
Here's how it might look:
$00.00 --> 0-4 participants
$20.00 --> 5-9 participants
$30.00 --> 10-14 participants
$40.00 --> 15-19 participants
$50.00 --> 20-24 participants
$60.00 --> 25-29 participants
$75.00 --> 30-34+ participants
I don't know what else I can do, folks. I'd be finding all the people I could, from anywhere I could. What are you waiting for?!
Predictions end on February 12th @ 11:59 PM EST
